The E-1 treaty trader category allows a national of a treaty country to come to the United States to carry on trade between the two countries. Türkiye and France both have E-1 treaties with the United States.

Broadly, it concerns:

  • Trade that already exists, rather than plans to find new business
  • Goods, and also services such as transportation, insurance, banking and technology
  • The nationality of the trader or of the trading company
  • The volume of trade, and how much of it runs between the two countries
  • Employees in executive or supervisory roles, or whose role depends on knowledge of the business

It is a temporary status. A spouse and children may accompany the trader. Requirements and consular practice change, so current information is worth checking before planning travel.

To discuss how these rules may apply to a specific situation, you may schedule a consultation. Scheduling a consultation does not create an attorney-client relationship.
